About the Artist:

Sandra Whiting has been a professional artist for over 35 years, working as a painter, print maker and collage artist. Her studio, Sweetwater Creek Farm Studio, is located on Whidbey Island, WA. Her work is held in various private, corporate, and public collections.

Sandra works primarily in oil paints and cold wax medium, building layers of color and texture on wood panels. This medium is the consistency of butter, soft and thick. After laying down many layers, like an archeologist, she digs back into the layers, bringing forth buried colors and textures. She also creates mixed media pieces with this medium and collage, pencils, crayons, and acrylics.

Artist's Statement:

Travel, nature, cities, emotions, relationships; these all are the motivators within my paintings. Using a variety of materials, including oil paints, cold wax medium, collage, pencils, and acrylics, I build layers upon layers of color and texture, which becomes the perfect surface to explore and develop. I work intuitively while uncovering scratches, marks, words, colors, and textures. What remains becomes the basis for my paintings.

The patterns, colors, and textures direct my thoughts as I move into the painting. It’s an exploration, a time of discovery, and always exciting. I love my time in the studio, never knowing just what I’ll uncover and create.
